Abstract

Royal jelly (RJ), diet exclusively for queen bees, has been considered a symbol of immortality and rejuvenation owing to the longer lifespan of queen bees than that of other bees. 10-Hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA), an active ingredient of RJ, has been reported to have skin health-promoting effects. However, another abundant ingredient, adenosine, has received less attention than 10-HDA. Therefore, we examined whether the skin health-promoting effect of RJ is linked to adenosine. We first quantified the adenosine content of RJ, and then treated fibroblasts with adenosine at a concentration equivalent to that in RJ. We verified that RJ increases collagen content, collagen fragment internalization, and hyaluronan content and inhibits MMP-1 expression, and adenosine increases collagen content and inhibits MMP-1 expression. These results suggest that adenosine in RJ increases collagen synthesis and inhibits MMP-1 expression, while components other than adenosine increase collagen fragment internalization and hyaluronan synthesis to collectively improve skin health.
